Projects > Intertidal Restoration

In 2008, with help from over 50 volunteers, PSRF restored 2.5 acres of intertidal habitat on public tidelands in Liberty Bay by removing derelict gear from a defunct shellfish operation, including 12,586 PVC pipes and over 7 miles of polypropylene line (37,752 feet). The PVC pipes will be re-used by Ekone Oyster Company in Willapa Bay, helping to create a win-win for all - clean tidelands for the public, access to mudflats for the birds, and free material for the farmer producing good oysters for us to eat.
Thanks to The Russell Family Foundation, Gordon Derr, Washington Department of Fish & Wildlife, Port of Poulsbo, Hood Canal Oyster Company, West Sound Academy, Bainbridge High School students, The Nature Conservancy and a slew of community volunteers.

Each line is composed of a 2 1/2 foot length of PVC every foot, with polypropylene rope strung along the top. There were a total of 12,586 pieces of PVC and over 7 miles of polypropylene rope (37,752 feet).
